The Caserta Sealions are one of two expansion teams that have joined the MFL for the 2001 season. While Italy is generally better known for its rabid support for soccer than for American football, the Sealions enjoy wide support among the U.S. armed forces personnel stationed at the large military bases in Naples and Sardinia. They are also known to have a small, but enthusiastic following among the Italian officer corps.
The Sealions face a real challenge in their first year.
Owner and general manager Robby Forlani admits that his football experience is limited, but figures that "having access to several armored fighting vehicles armed with 105mm guns should help me slap down that big stinky fish man." While it seems unlikely that Caserta will be able to imitate Savage's unprecedented championship-winning expansion season, the Sealions are optimistic about their chances of finishing on the north side of .500.
