Along with the Mankato Hummingbirds, the Baldwin Wallabies are the only original MFL franchise which has remained loyal to its beginnings. Despite a slow start to the 1999 season, the Wallabies were catapulted into league prominence following the surprise promotion of Dan Lunstad from mascot trainer to dual duties as coach and general manager. Young Daniel captained the bouncing marsupials on an incredible 8-1-1 charge to finish the season, carrying the team to the MFL championship game.
A loss to his brother's Hummingbirds did not break the team's upbeat spirit, and Baldwin entered the 2000 season with high hopes. However, another slow start punctuated by a four-game midseason losing streak put the Wallabies behind the curve, and two close, but disappointing losses to Vadnais Heights and Ponte Vedra at the end of the season caused Baldwin to miss the playoffs. Unrest in the town of Baldwin sparked rumors that Lunstad would resign one of his two posts after questions concerning possible violations by the young football genius of a contract clause, but a strong, though delayed vote of confidence from the team's owner made it clear that Lunstad would be back to lead the Wallabies in 2001.
Baldwin vs. Mankato is a hard-fought family affair.
The Wallabies extend a fraternal welcome to Colorado.
Baldwin is a small-market team not generally considered to be a member of the league's elite, but the team's recent success, combined with Dan Lunstad's dedication to research and hard work, make it impossible to count out the Wallabies. Baldwin fans tantalized by their team's unexpected 1999 run are eager to see if their brilliant young GM/Coach can put together another team capable of challenging for the Loki Cup.
